Why does this question keep coming up on some teams - "Why the heck are we doing this?" Why does it create so much tension, generate destructive conflict and drain so much energy? And how might a leader navigating this? Before we jump into solutions, it might help to make sure we are trying to solve the right problem.
I remember attending a training where a slide read "A mediocre solution to the right problem is better than the perfect solution to the wrong problem."
What if destructive conflict in organizations was not because people were incompetent, lazy, untrustworthy or disengaged. But because they were brilliant, hard-working, sincere and invested. People who cared deeply. Came in to work every single day with the sincere intent to do what was best for their stakeholders.
How can that be rue, you might wonder?
It might be true if what each one of them thought was best for stakeholders was different from what every other person thought was best for their stakeholders.
